Georges Ascher was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1884 and died in Auschwitz in 1943.
Ascher is considered a member artist of the ‘École de Paris’ or ‘Jewish School of Paris’.
Georges Ascher was trained as an architect at Warsaw University of Technology and then continued his studies in Germany. Having fought in the Polish liberation campaign, he moved to Paris in 1925 and devoted himself to painting. Sometime later he moved with his family to La Ciotat, France. Ascher painted landscapes, still lifes, and subjects on the history of the Jewish people. In 1943 he and his wife were arrested under the Vichy regime, and were deported to Gurs internment camp. Georges Ascher’s work was destroyed in his studio while he was arrested.
After World War II, art collector Oscar Ghez (1905-1998) acquired works by Jewish painters from the Paris School who died in deportation. He kept these paintings in his museum at the Petit Palais in Geneva and offered 137 to the University of Haifa in 1978.
Works by Georges Ascher were included in this collection.
