Uri Lifshitz, a painter and sculptor, was born in Kibbutz Givat Hashlosha, Israel, in 1936.
His parents were amongst the founders of the kibbutz.
He served in the Israel Defense Force, special forces commando Unit 101, under Ariel Sharon. He began painting in the 1950s. In the 1960s and 1970s he was one of the founders of the “Ten Plus” group which posed an alternative to the lyrical abstract style of the “New Horizons” movement.
His early work was characterized by a lyrical abstraction style. In the early 1960s he changed directions into figurative art. He never received formal training but studied briefly with artist Haim Kave. Lifshitz's works are characterized by postmodern semi-abstract paintings with bold and passionate brush strokes.
His first one-man show was held in Tel Aviv in 1962 at the Ekked Gallery. He participated in group shows of “New Horizons”, “Tatzpit”, and “Ten Plus”. In 1966 he exhibited at the Constant Munt Gallery in Amsterdam and a year later at the Israel-America House in New York. In 1969, the Israel Museum held a one-man show of his works and in 1970 he participated in the Sao Paulo Biennale. An exhibition of his paintings, drawings and etchings was held at the Tel Aviv Museum in 1974.

Uri Lifshitz passed away on May 28th, 2011, at the age of 75.
